A Journey to the Land Beyond the Forest

Welcome to my journey to Transylvania and the 7th International Workshops of the Drama Schools of the ITI-UNESCO Chair of Theatre and Culture of Civilizations in Sinaia, Romania. While there I will be attending several conferences, directing performances of Ibsen's Ghosts and Euripides Medea, and presenting a paper entitled "Unlocking the Mysterious Disease of Ibsen's Ghosts to "Generation Y""

Targu Mures

The University City, some will say that Iassy is the University City as it has more schools but I disagree. Targu Mures is a different city with a different look and feel. Targu Mures has the flavor of Vienna or other cities in Central Europe. It was founded and inhabited by Romanians of Hungarian decent and is home to the Theatre University. When we arrived in Targu Mures we toured the city for a short while and then were hosted to a wonderful cocktail party reception by the faculty and students of the university. This reception was followed by two performances; one a puppetry show and the second a cabaret show popular in Targu Mures in the 1920’s. The performances were wonderful and were followed by a dinner in our honor. Our accomodations this nite were at the Hotel Translyvania. Here are some Photographs of the Rector of the university, the English teacher, and Professor Janusz, professor of theatre history. Please note the wonderful theatre library of the university, I could have spent hours there. Professor Janusz was kind enough to speak with me about Hungarian theatre in the early 20th century. The following day the professors took us on a tour of the City Citadel, the puppet theatre, the underground theatre and many other sites. The city center is filled with several small theatre venues. The underground theatre is rather unique as it is in a basement and has many small playing areas with 10 to 15 seats at each area for spectators. Within the walls of the city center is an outdoor theatre which you can see in the photograph. I would like to thank the Rector, the Faculty and Students of the Theatre University for their kindness while we were visiting Romania. I was very fortunate to be able to spend time with Professor Janusz in Targu Mures and later in Sinaia. If I had to pick a city to visit again it would be lovely Targu Mures. The photograph of the birds on the telephone pole are Storks, a common sight in Romania but no so common in North America.
